Independent small-ship cruise line Variety Cruises is stepping up its focus on Australia and New Zealand, launching a search for a dedicated National Business Development Manager to support a market showing strong growth and significant further potential.

The family-owned cruise company, operating since 1949, sails a fleet of eight boutique small ships carrying just 34–72 guests across destinations including Greece, French Polynesia, Seychelles, Cape Verde, Italy and the Adriatic.

Australia and New Zealand have become an increasingly important part of Variety Cruises’ commercial growth story, with the business seeing a strong upturn in demand and growing engagement from the travel trade.

The newly created National Business Development Manager – Australia & New Zealand role is designed to build on that momentum, expand distribution and help develop new opportunities across FIT, groups, charters and special-interest travel.

“We are seeing very strong momentum from Australia and New Zealand, and the opportunity now is to convert that into sustained market growth,” said Variety Cruises Chief Commercial Officer Malvina Vonta.

“There is already a solid foundation in place. The next phase is about broadening distribution, strengthening the right partnerships, increasing passenger volumes and building a more meaningful long-term position for Variety Cruises across the region.”

Shaping a market with momentum

The timing is also particularly relevant from a product and access perspective.

“With direct flights to Tahiti now opening up new potential for the Australian market, alongside the continued strength of Greece, we have two highly relevant destination platforms to build around. Combined with the strong upturn we are already seeing, this gives us a very clear commercial opportunity in the region.”

Variety Cruises describes its philosophy as “small is our luxury”, with its ships designed to take guests beyond traditional cruise ports and closer to smaller islands, communities, wildlife and destinations inaccessible to larger vessels.

The role

The successful candidate will work closely with the Chief Commercial Officer and the wider global commercial team, building relationships with travel advisors, agency networks, wholesalers, tour operators and strategic partners across Australia and New Zealand.

The role will also involve trade training, webinars, roadshows, events and familiarisation trips, alongside identifying new partnership opportunities and feeding market intelligence back into the wider commercial strategy.

“This is a market with clear headroom and a strong trajectory. The opportunity is to join at the point where there is already momentum, but still significant scope to shape how the market develops over the coming years.”

Variety Cruises is now accepting applications for the National Business Development Manager – Australia & New Zealand position.
